SAND HILLS — Vernon’s Alex Brown and Austin Brown may be related, but they’re far enough apart on the family tree that Coach Thomas Register said “they don’t run into each other at family reunions.”

The Browns’ get-togethers come on the basketball court.

The Yellow Jackets’ backcourt tandem combined for 42 points and 10 3-pointers as unbeaten Vernon rolled to a 79-52 victory over host Bozeman in a non-district boys basketball game Friday night.

Alex Brown, a senior, finished with 24 points, and Austin Brown, a junior, tossed in 18 for the Yellow Jackets, who improved to 4-0 overall. Bozeman dropped to 4-3.

“I feel good because we’re 14 (players) deep,” Register said. “There’s not one guy I can’t put out there, and I’ll take full advantage of that.”

Vernon harassed the Bucks with a full-court press that generated a multitude of turnovers, and the Browns overwhelmed Bozeman with their athleticism and impressive long-range displays. Austin Brown scored 10 of his points in the first quarter, and Alex Brown dropped in a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Yellow Jackets built a 19-12 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets scored the first 12 points of the second quarter to seize a 31-12 lead and weren’t threatened the rest of the way. Bozeman scored only seven points in the quarter against Vernon’s intense defensive pressure.
