SPRINGFIELD — Just when Rutherford almost has you convinced that it is an ordinary basketball team, and there were times that verged on that in Thursday’s 68-51 Region 1-5A quarterfinal victory over Wakulla, the Rams hit you with a run.

The compilation of incessant harassment and aggression suddenly meshes with deadly outside accuracy and boom! A 17-13 deficit becomes a 26-17 lead in less than 3½ minutes.

Or a precarious 46-42 edge heading into the fourth quarter quickly becomes 62-44 and it’s time to start thinking about a semifinal opponent.

For Rutherford , 24-2, that means Tallahassee Rickards on Tuesday night in the Ram House. Rickards eliminated Choctawhatchee 76-66 on Thursday. Wakulla ended its season 12-14.

“For the last couple years it seems like we make our run in the second quarter,” Rutherford coach Rhondie Ross said. “It’s kind of like boxing with a feeling-out process.

“You’ve got to get into some type of rhythm, like in any sport. I try and coach every possession, but they say every good team makes at least one run in a game. We try not to look at the clock or the score.”
