PANAMA CITY BEACH — North Bay Haven thwarted Rocky Bayou Christian’s two-point conversion in overtime before scoring the winning touchdown on the ensuing possession in a 20-19 win in a high school football game at Pete Edwards Field on Friday night.
The game was the season opener for both programs.
Rocky Bayou (0-1) scored a touchdown on its overtime possession to take a 19-13 lead, but NBH denied the two-point conversion. The Buccaneers scored on second down when quarterback Houston Morris found Braiden Hardesty on a fade route. Daniel Bingham kicked the extra point to cap a comeback victory.
Rocky Bayou jumped ahead 13-0 in the first quarter. The Knights scored on a TD pass on their first possession, and with under a minute remaining recovered a Bucs’ fumble in the end zone.
North Bay Haven pulled within 13-7 at halftime when quarterback Michael Cowart passed to Tyjon Cuffee and Bingham added the point.
The Bucs tied game midway through the fourth quarter when Morris passed 35 yards to tight end Billy Baine. A penalty set back NBH on the extra point and the score remain 13-13.
The Bucs were thwarted by offensive penalties in the waning moments of regulation, but also blocked a Rocky Bayou field-goal attempt to secure overtime.
“Really we only gave up one touchdown in four quarters on defense; we were flying around and hitting people,” NBH coach Jared Hale said.
“This is something to build on. We’ve got a lot to work on and get better at. We’ve got a big game with South Walton next week. They’ve got a really good football team.”
