The last week of the regular season doesn’t do anything for district standing, but it can and did change the PanhandleVarsity Power Ranking.
Liberty County was idle in the final week but that didn’t stop the Bulldogs from rising to the top. They are one of the area’s top teams with seven straight wins and are one of six advancing to the playoffs on Friday.
The remaining four teams in the previous top 5 went 2-2 in the final week. Only two of the bottom eight were victorious.
Here is the final PanhandleVarsity Power Ranking, with record and last week’s rank in parentheses:
1. Liberty County (8-2) (tie 1)
The Bulldogs’ 1-2 start is a distant memory, as they are one of the top teams in Region 2-1A.
2. Bozeman (8-2) (3)
The Bucks polished off Cottondale 48-22 in winning for the fourth straight game and setting up a rematch with Liberty County in the playoffs.
3. Graceville (8-2) (5)
The Tigers’ remarkable turnaround continued with a 42-41 win over Chipley, as they finished with six straight wins a season after finishing 2-8.
4. Marianna (8-2) (6)
The Bulldogs took out their missed playoff aggression on Holmes County in a 34-0 victory.
5. Holmes County (7-2) (tie 1)
The Blue Devils fell hard to Marianna, but will be making a second straight playoff appearance against Blountstown.
6. Blountstown (6-4) (4)
The Tigers lost to Mayo Lafayette 16-7 to end a two-game winning streak.
7. Port St. Joe (7-3) (7)
The Tiger Sharks finished the season with a 20-6 win over Sneads.
8. Rutherford (3-7) (10)
The Rams capped a difficult season with a 31-23 win over Mosley for the Bay County title.
9. Cottondale (4-5) (8)
The Hornets lost to the Bucks and for the third time in their last four games.
10. Chipley (4-5) (9)
The Tigers lost to Graceville and finished with two straight losses.
11. Mosley (3-7) (11)
The Dolphins lost to Rutherford and dropped their fifth straight.
12. Bay (3-7) (12)
The Tornadoes were roughed up by Niceville 35-7.
13. Arnold (2-7) (13)
The Marlins were no match for Fort Walton Beach in a 48-6 loss and finished with four consecutive defeats.
14. Sneads (4-6) (14)
The Pirates lost to Port St. Joe.
15. Wewahitchka (3-7) (16)
The Gators ended with a 34-15 win over West Gadsden.
16. Franklin County (2-7) (16)
The Seahawks ended with a 37-10 loss to South Walton.
17. Vernon (1-9) (17)
The Yellow Jackets lost to Baker 42-20 and completed a dismal season with eight consecutive losses.
