It’s another week and there’s a new No. 1 team in the PanhandleVarsity Power Ranking.
Marianna lost for the first time, leaving no unbeaten teams in The News Herald’s 17-school coverage umbrella. Two of the Top 5 teams were idle last week.
Seven teams came away with victories. Seven teams lost.
Here is the latest PanhandleVarsity Power Ranking, with record and last week’s rank in parentheses:
1. Blountstown (4-1) (2)
The Tigers shut out Sneads in winning their fourth straight game in showing their the area’s hottest team.
2. Holmes County (4-1) (3)
The Blue Devils were off last week.
3. Bozeman (4-1) (4)
The Bucks also were idle.
4. Marianna (5-1) (1)
The Bulldogs were humbled by District 1-4A rival East Gadsden 47-0, but they still have a chance to make the playoffs.
5. Liberty County (4-2) (5)
The Bulldogs beat West Gadsden 34-24 for their third consecutive victory.
6. Chipley (3-3) (7)
The Tigers evened their record with a 37-6 rout of South Walton for a second straight win.
7. Port St. Joe (3-2) (8)
The Tiger Sharks dusted off Franklin County 56-14 in winning for a second time in a row.
8. Graceville (3-2) (9)
The Tigers beat Wewahitchka 46-28 in maintaining control of their destiny.
9. Cottondale (3-2) (10)
The Hornets took a huge step toward a playoff berth with a 34-13 win over defending District 2-1A champion Vernon.
10. Mosley (3-3) 6)
The Dolphins fell hard in their Homecoming to Niceville 42-10.
11. Arnold (2-3) (12)
The Marlins held back Rutherford 10-7.
12. Bay (2-3) (13)
The Tornadoes were idle.
13. Sneads (2-4) (11)
The Pirates couldn’t forge past Blountstown in losing for the third straight game.
14. Rutherford (1-5) (14)
The Rams’ difficult season continued with a close loss to Arnold.
15. Vernon (1-4) (15)
The Yellow Jackets’ slide reached three games in the defeat to Cottondale.
16. Franklin County (1-5) (16)
The Seahawks were dropped by Port St. Joe.
17. Wewahitchka (1-5) (17)
The Gators’ couldn’t hold on to a halftime lead against Graceville and have lost three in a row.
