SATELLITE BEACH — Arnold was hampered by five turnovers and fell 21-0 Friday night to Satellite in an outcome that was punctuated by the Scorpions’ fourth-down conversions.
The Marlins, 2-4, trailed 7-0 at halftime but resultantly had only four possessions in the second half as Satellite, 2-4, ate up huge chunks of the clock with methodical drives.
Turnovers on the Marlins’ first three series eventually doomed any chance of a comeback bid. Although one resulted in a missed 27-yard field goal, the Scorpions finally made it a two-possession game with 8:53 remaining.
“Our defense played good, we just didn’t do anything on offense,” Arnold coach James Hale said after the Marlins lost two fumbles and suffered three interceptions.
Satellite took over on Arnold’s 42 following a turnover early in the fourth quarter. Facing fourth-and-3 at the 35, quarterback Cole Schell rolled left and ultimately broke five tackle attempts on his way to the end zone.
Satellite capped the scoring with two more fourth-down conversions, one a run by Schell and another by penalty. The final touchdown came on a 16-yard pass reception by Calvin Smith with 1:19 left.
The Marlins drove in Satellite territory on their first series of the third quarter, but couldn’t come up with a key play when needed. Treshon Selders moved to quarterback and opened the drive by rolling left for 20 yards. Two plays later, however, he lofted a pass that was intercepted by Brad Ydo and returned 65 yards for a touchdown.
A penalty on the Scorpions negated that turnaround, and Adam McAfee returned at quarterback for the Marlins. After two runs by tailback Nick Riley, McAfee found Dario Batiste for 9 yards and a first down at Satellite’s 30.
On the next play, McAfee faced a strong rush and his pass was intercepted at the goal line and returned 55 yards by Joey Hibbard.
The Marlins’ deepest penetration of the second half came on their final series. A pass interference penalty gave them a first down and some momentum, and McAfee passed 18 yards to Anthony Nicholson and 17 yards to Hayden Deforge to reach Satellite’s 25.
McAfee’s scramble was stopped for no gain on the final play of the game.
Arnold is idle next week before returning to district play against West Florida.
