CHOCTAWHATCHEE — Rutherford watched its district tournament title hopes evaporate quickly Friday night.
Host Choctawhatchee scored a pair of goals early in the second half to open up a big lead, and Rutherford couldn’t reverse the tide in a 5-0 loss in the District 2-3A boys soccer tournament championship game.
“It was kind of a tale of two halves,” Rutherford coach Michael Brown said. “We had a strong first half. (The Indians) were up 1-0 at half, but it was a freak shot they scored on. The first half was 50-50, and we had as many opportunities as they did. In the second half we came out with a game plan, and we didn’t execute it. They put a goal on us pretty fast in the second half and another one two minutes later.”
The Rams (8-5-4) now will play on the road at either Gulf Breeze or Pensacola Washington in the Region 1-3A quarterfinals next Wednesday.
Goalkeeper Andrew Mask made six saves for Rutherford.
Pensacola Catholic 4, Bay 0
PENSACOLA — Bay trailed by a goal at halftime before Pensacola Catholic put the District 1-2A tournament title game out of reach in the second half.
Zac Watson stopped 10 shots in goal for the Tornadoes (9-11-1).
Bay travels either to Florida High in Tallahassee or Taylor County next Wednesday for a Region 1-2A quarterfinal showdown. Taylor County and Florida High play today.
