PANAMA CITY — Bay’s soccer teams hosted Pensacola Catholic in key District 1-2A matches on Friday with mixed but improved results.

The girls played to a 0-0 tie in a rematch of the team’s lone district loss in November. The boys avenged an earlier loss with a 1-0 victory at Tommy Oliver Stadium to pull even in the district standings.

Michael Layfield put in the lone goal of both matches in the 26th minute to propel Bay. Pensacola Catholic won the previous matchup 6-0 while the Tornadoes were undermanned. Bay has 15 freshmen in the program and five start on varsity and Friday’s win could build momentum.

Zach Watson stopped three shots in goal for Bay, which improved to 6-5-1 overall and 6-1 in the district.

The girls’ match was a defensive struggle with shots coming at a premium. Goalkeeper Genevieve Smith was tasked with only having to stop five shots, as Bay improved on a 2-0 loss to Pensacola Catholic Nov. 6.

Bay stayed steady at 12-2-1 overall, the other loss coming to Arnold, and 6-1-1 in district matches. Bay’s boys and girls host Bozeman on Tuesday.
