PANAMA CITY — Bay’s soccer teams hosted Pensacola Catholic in key District 1-2A matches on Friday with mixed but improved results.
The girls played to a 0-0 tie in a rematch of the team’s lone district loss in November. The boys avenged an earlier loss with a 1-0 victory at Tommy Oliver Stadium to pull even in the district standings.
Michael Layfield put in the lone goal of both matches in the 26th minute to propel Bay. Pensacola Catholic won the previous matchup 6-0 while the Tornadoes were undermanned. Bay has 15 freshmen in the program and five start on varsity and Friday’s win could build momentum.
Zach Watson stopped three shots in goal for Bay, which improved to 6-5-1 overall and 6-1 in the district.
The girls’ match was a defensive struggle with shots coming at a premium. Goalkeeper Genevieve Smith was tasked with only having to stop five shots, as Bay improved on a 2-0 loss to Pensacola Catholic Nov. 6.
Bay stayed steady at 12-2-1 overall, the other loss coming to Arnold, and 6-1-1 in district matches. Bay’s boys and girls host Bozeman on Tuesday.
Rutherford 58, Luella 53
ATLANTA — Khaliel Spearman paced Rutherford with 22 points in the opening game of the Florida-Georgia Shootout. The Rams rallied from a 31-27 halftime lead by outscoring Luella 18-8 in the third quarter. Jai Jencks added 13 points for the Rams (9-0), who play host Tri-Cities today at 7 p.m. CST.
Chipley 72, Graceville 68
GRACEVILLE — Tyrome Sharpe scored 26 points and Trent Forrest 21 for Chipley (8-0), which is at Vernon on Thursday. Graceville won the JV game but no score was reported.
Wewahitchka 75, Vernon 72
VERNON — Raheem Wright scored 21 points and pulled down 19 rebounds to pace Wewahitchka. Clay Sasser 16 and Micah Lister 15. Vernon won the JV 53-27. Jeff Hunter scored 12 points.
Wewahitchka (6-2) hosts Port St. Joe on Tuesday.
Rutherford57, Gulf Breeze 31
SPRINGFIELD — Marsheba Addison scored 25 points to lead Rutherford to a District 1-5A win. The Rams (4-4, 2-1) are at Arnold on Tuesday. Rutherford won the JV game 26-24.
Bay 38, West Florida Tech 35
PANAMA CITY — Devyn Austin scored 15 points and Anissa Martin nine for Bay in a District 1-5A triumph. The Tornadoes (3-6, 2-1) host Gulf Breeze tonight.
Wewahitchka 31, Vernon 26
VERNON — Tara Walding scored 10 and Jessica Smith nine for Wewahitchka, while Valerie Peak had 12 rebounds for the Gators.
Arnold40, Bozeman 39
PANAMA CITYBEACH — Arnold edged Bozeman in a dual match in front of the Marlins’ strudent body. The teams tied 39-all, but Arnold won the match based on most near-fall points.
