PANAMA CITY — Mosley’s Nat Dixon was relaxing on a bench awaiting the high jump competition Wednesday in the District 2-3A track and field meet at Tommy Oliver Stadium.

It wasn’t a repose that Dixon experiences very often these days.

The Boston College football commitment ultimately cleared a personal best 6 feet, 8 inches to easily move on to next week’s region meet in Tallahassee. He led a contingent of three Dolphins and two relays who advanced to the next level.

Also advancing for Mosley was Gabrielle Krajniak, fourth in the 800 meters and Abigail Oliver, second in the high jump and third in the long jump, as well as the boys 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Fort Walton Beach won the team title in both divisions of 2-3A, which is dominated by Okaloosa County schools both in number and results. Mosley finished fifth in the boys with 32 points and sixth in the girls with 20.

Dixon was the Dolphins’ lone district champion, but that was as much a forgone conclusion in the high jump as the Fort Walton Beach team titles. Dixon cleared 6-7 recently, and noted before the high jump began that no other participant in the field had gone higher than 6 feet.

Once he entered the competition, Dixon busied himself by helping set the bar, and at another juncture taking a broom to clear off the plant area. The word busy best describes Dixon these days, who when he’s not high jumping and entering other track events is practicing with Mosley’s nationally ranked baseball team.

And when not involved on the high school level, Dixon already is active in BC’s offseason conditioning program.

“I practice track Monday, and sometimes Wednesday,” Dixon said. “The rest is baseball. I go back and forth as much as I can. When it comes to these meets, Coach (Todd) Harless understands” the need to miss baseball practice.

“I’ve been in the weight room, working hard on my lower body” to help in the high jump. “Boston College sent me an offseason program that I’m doing right now. Every day.”

The hectic schedule didn’t bother the 6-4, 188-pounder on Wednesday. The high jump field was thinned considerably by the time Dixon took off his sweats, and after the bar reached 6 feet he was jumping alone.

Dixon missed once at 6-6 before clearing that height, and also once at 6-8 before barely touching the bar on his second attempt. It wavered, but stayed up.

After bouncing the bar with his chest on one attempt at 6-10, Dixon decided it was time to move on to the long jump finals where he also placed first in 21-4, and then the 4x100 relay where he was running the third leg.

He will attempt to qualify for this third consecutive state finals in the high jump next week when the field should be much stronger. Otherwise, Rutherford’s Fester Little, who recently cleared 6-6, has been his main competition this spring. Rutherford competes at the Class 2A level in track.
