LAKELAND — Arnold’s Taylor Ryan, Marianna’s Devin Combs and Mosley’s Forrest Lang paced area wrestlers with podium finishes at the state wrestling meet on Saturday.
Ryan placed fifth in the 145-pound weight class and Combs (152) sixth in Class 1A. Lang (152) was sixth in the Class 2A event with both tournaments contested at The Lakeland Center.
Combs was one of two area wrestlers to win opening matches on Friday. He lost his championship semifinal match to Crystal River’s Dylan Ayala by a 4-0 decision to fall into the consolation bracket. Combs pinned Lemon Bay’s Nick Schofield and edged Jupiter Christian’s Tag Wilber 6-4 to advance to the place round.
Ryan was 1-1 on Friday and defeated Jacksonville University Christian’s Trevor Betros 5-1 and secured his placement with a pin of Naples Golden Gate’s Frankie Jaramillo in 28 seconds. He built momentum with a 12-2 win in a Friday wrestleback victory over Titusville’s Romel Shorter.
Lang rebounded from a close first-round loss for a 12-0 major decision over Homestead’s Travon Norman. Lang squeaked by Naples Palmetto Ridge’s Theo Curto 4-3 and surpassed Orlando Edgewater’s Jordan Mainer 8-2.
Arnold’s Brock Carlan (120) dropped his championship semifinal match, was 1-1 in wrestlebacks and one victory away from placing. His Marlin teammates, Colby Baker (138) and Kole Krimm (heavyweight), survived second matches on Friday, but lost and were eliminated in their first bouts on Saturday. Bozeman’s Jonah Savage (106) and Kris Kenney (170) and Rutherford’s Alijah Saffore (220) were eliminated after two straight losses on Friday.
