LYNN HAVEN — The West team retained the Panhandle Cup in a high school match play golf tournament, but it wasn’t because Lindsey Harrison let her East teammates down.
The Arnold High School golfer won all three of her matches played at Bay Point Meadows over the weekend, but the two squads featuring some of the premier golfers in North Florida played to a 12-12 tie. That enabled the West, which has won the competition five of the six years it has been held, to retain the cup.
The match play event pits 12 of the best high school golfers from the eastern Florida Panhandle against 12 of their counterparts from the western Florida Panhandle. Each team comprises eight boys and four girls, East vs. West, in a Ryder/Solheim Cup format.
Harrison was the lone Bay County golfer participating, and teamed with Teresa Conroy of John Paul II Catholic to win her 4-ball match 4 and 3 against Antonia Poate of Niceville and Katt Crowdis of Gulf Breeze.
Harrison and Caroline Parrish of Maclay then defeated Alexis Hazard of Pensacola Catholic and Poate 4 and 2 in the alternate shot format.
On Sunday in singles play, Harrison bested Hazard 2 and 1 to become the only golfer on the East to earn three points toward the team total.
The tournament opened with the West taking a 4.5-1.5 lead after the Saturday morning 4-ball matches. The East rebounded in the afternoon to win four of the six alternate shot competitions to narrow the West’s lead to 6.5-5.5 entering Sunday singles play.
